The Concept Test Trap
I worked on Silk Nextmilk. It crushed it in concept tests.
But when it launched? It underperformed.
Where concept tests fail
Because in every concept test, we explained exactly what the product was:
- 
how it tasted like milk
 - 
why that mattered
 - 
how we made it
 
We crafted the stimulus carefully — a clear story, supportive visuals, well-written claims. People “got it.” They said they’d buy it. So we moved forward with confidence.
But here’s the problem:
When it hit shelves, shoppers didn’t get that story.
They saw a pack. A name. A few claims. That’s it.
And unless they stopped to study it which, let’s be honest, no one does they had no idea what “Nextmilk” really meant.
The packaging didn’t (and maybe couldn’t) communicate everything we’d embedded into the concept test. On shelf, there’s no voiceover, no explanation, no claim hierarchy breakdown.
And the result? Confusion.
People didn’t understand what the product was and they didn’t buy.
The Bigger Problem With Concept Testing
What happened with Silk Nextmilk wasn’t a fluke. It’s a pattern.
Concept tests often give shoppers way more information than they ever see in the real world.
And when they don’t, surveys still force people to pay attention in a way the real world never does.
In a test, you might spend 60 seconds reading a concept.
On shelf, you get about 3 seconds before they move on.
In a test, people “consider” your product because they’ve been prompted to.
In the real world, they scroll past it unless it hits immediately.
And those differences matter, a lot.
Alternatives to concept testing
This is one of the reasons I started Accelebrand.
We don’t ask people what they might do.
We launch the product in the wild and watch what they actually do.
No concepts.
No forced attention.
No hypothetical purchases.
Just real people, making real decisions, in real contexts.
We run social ads that mirror real marketing. We send people to pages that look like the real store. We let them browse, click, scroll, and — if it’s strong enough — buy.
If it doesn’t work in that environment, it’s not going to work in the real world either.

I’ve seen teams do everything “right” — only to realize too late that their testing was built on the wrong signals.
